In the latest edition of EW, Stephen King has an article that lists this summer’s must-reads. In it he posts a couple statistics that are jaw-dropping to me.

1. Roughly 1/3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.

2. 42% of college grads never read another book after college.

Holy crap.  What the hell is wrong with people?

At least today with the hundreds of channels of television available and an internet full of everything,  people have many options to learn from. Let’s hope that the huge chunk of people that don’t read books are gaining knowledge from those other outlets.

I’m glad that J.K. Rowling has gotten a whole generation of kids interested in reading again.  Amazon and Apple are hitting the young kids with technology that should give them access to any book they’ll ever want to read.  Hopefully when the new generation graduates from college, 42% of them won’t stop reading. That would be a real shame…
